Emile Hokayem, Senior Fellow for Middle East Security at IISS, explains the ongoing strategic challenges in the Middle East and the Levant.

The Syrian conflict has transformed the strategic landscape in the Levant. After six years of a gruelling, brutal conflict, the survival of the Assad regime is guaranteed in the foreseeable future. But even as this civil war winds down and the collapse of the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, accelerates, old fault lines are being revived as new ones are emerging.

The uneasy relationship between autonomy-seeking Syrian Kurds and the Assad regime will likely be tested soon. Syrian rebels are looking towards regional patrons to survive. Transnational Shia militias now operate in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, both guaranteeing and challenging state authority. Israel views with greater concern the expansion of Iranian power. Russia’s successful intervention in Syria has placed Moscow at the centre of regional politics. Posing as a mediator between regional powers, Moscow is now charged with managing rivalries as the United States struggles to define its role post-ISIS and determines how to contain Iran.
