E’ la bellezza a riaccendere il ricordo delle idee, a dare il via al cammino conoscitivo di liberazione del prigioniero della caverna. E secondo Platone la bellezza è tutt’uno con l’amore.
Bellezza e amore costituiscono un binomio inscindibile. La bellezza suscita in ogni essere umano il desiderio di conseguire quella bellezza. D’altra parte l’amore non può essere che amore del bello. Per chi è innamorato l’oggetto del proprio amore è la massima bellezza.
PLATONE: IL SIMPOSIO
Secondo Platone, l’amore è un sentimento costitutivo, fondamentale, di ogni essere umano. Perché? E in cosa consiste il sentimento amoroso? Da dove viene e dove ci porta?
Nel Simposio Platone spiega tutto questo in due miti.
Simposio vuol dire letteralmente bere insieme. Si chiamavano così le cene della élite aristocratica e intellettuale greca dei tempi. La fase più significativa della cena era la fase finale che avveniva passandosi una coppa piena di vino. E al tempo stesso si discuteva.
A proporre i due miti sono Aristofane e Socrate. Quello proposto da Aristofane è il famoso mito dell’androgino.
L’ANDROGINO: UOMO CHE E’ ANCHE DONNA
Il mito racconta che in origine gli uomini era doppi, e cioè avevano quattro gambe, quattro braccia, una testa ma con due volti, e avevano due sessi. Erano individui molto più grandi e molto più potenti di quanto lo siamo noi. E i due sessi potevano essere o uno maschile e uno femminile o due maschili o due femminili.
Gli androgini si ritennero così forti da poter scalzare gli dei dell’Olimpo dal loro potere. Ma vennero duramente sconfitti. Per punirli Zeus ordinò ad Apollo di tagliarli in due.
Siamo quindi tutti metà. E ogni metà cerca la sua corrispondente. Secondo il mito di Aristofane si è per forza attratti dalla propria antica metà.
Nell’economia del Simposio, il racconto di Aristofane introduce in parte il mito che verrà raccontato da Socrate, e in parte serve a metterne in luce la differenza. La teoria dell’Amore di Platone è legata al secondo mito, quello che narra Socrate, che a sua volta dice di averlo sentito da Diotima, una sacerdotessa del tempio di Apollo.
PLATONE E IL MITO DI EROS
La storia raccontata da Socrate avviene sull’Olimpo, dove ha inizio un sontuoso banchetto per la nascita di Afrodite. Tutti gli dei sono stati invitati, tranne Penìa, la dea della mancanza e della povertà. Tutti mangiano e bevono, e alla fine tutti sono ubriachi. E in questo momento arriva Penìa, non invitata, che va a raccogliere quello che resta della festa. A un certo punto vede Poros, giovane e bellissimo, addormentato. Ha un rapporto sessuale con lui.
Pòros vuol dire acquisizione o espediente. E’ quello che ha sempre un colpo di ingegno che gli permette di farcela, di ottenere ciò di cui ha bisogno. E’ capace di vivere in modo selvaggio, di dormire sul prato, di vestirsi da straccione.
Dall’incontro tra Penìa e Pòros nasce Eros, e cioè l’amore. Figlio di mancanza e furbizia.
Il significato razionale di questo mito, che Platone poi spiega, è che noi ci innamoriamo perché ci sentiamo mancanti di qualche cosa, ci sentiamo incompleti. E il nostro innamoramento è desiderio di acquisire le qualità che rinveniamo nella persona di cui ci innamoriamo.
Per Platone, quindi, l’amore è il desiderio di completarsi, di acquisire capacità, doti e qualità attraverso la relazione di scambio e di interazione con un'altra persona.
LA DIFFERENZA TRA LE DUE CONCEZIONI DELL’AMORE
Tra questa concezione dell’amore e quella di Aristofane c’è una minima convergenza e una significativa differenza.
Quella di Aristofane era rivolta al passato, si trattava di ricostituire una situazione precedente perduta. Quella di Platone è invece è rivolta al futuro, è un cambiamento e un perfezionamento.
AMORE E BELLEZZA
Ma perché l’amore è legato alla bellezza? Perché Pòros era bellissimo e perché l’accoppiamento, e quindi la nascita di Eros, avviene nell’ambito del banchetto in onore della nascita di Afrodite, che è il simbolo della bellezza. Si può amare solo nella bellezza e la bellezza suscita per forza amore.
Bellezza e amore costituiscono un binomio inscindibile. La bellezza suscita in ogni essere umano il desiderio di conseguire quella bellezza. D’altra parte l’amore non può essere che amore del bello. Per chi è innamorato l’oggetto del proprio amore è la massima bellezza.
