Il cammino di uscita dalla caverna del prigioniero liberato rappresenta l’ascesa conoscitiva verso il Vero e quella estetico-emotiva verso il Bello. Ma anche quella morale (o etica) verso il Bene. Secondo Platone, per raggiungere il Bene occorre sviluppare la virtù.
COS’E’ LA VIRTU’
In cosa consiste la virtù umana? Poiché l’essenza dell’uomo è l’anima e poiché questa è tripartita, ogni sua parte ha una virtù propria. Per l’anima razionale, collocata nella testa, è la sapienza. Per l’anima volitiva, situata nel petto, è il coraggio. Per l’anima desiderante, presente nel ventre, è la temperanza. Tuttavia, queste tre virtù possono essere tali solo perché l’anima ha una virtù superiore che le collega e le unifica: la giustizia. Essa stabilisce la differente “misura”, cioè il diverso peso, che ogni parte dell’anima deve avere rispetto alle altre. La giustizia impone un ordine gerarchico per cui l’anima razionale dirige quella volitiva che a sua volta comanda quella desiderante.
PLATONE: PERCHE’ L’ANIMA RAZIONALE COMANDA
Platone motiva questa gerarchia sostenendo che per stabilire la giusta misura di ogni parte dell’anima occorre conoscere l’Uno, la “misura esattissima”. Questo può farlo solo l’anima razionale, cui spetta dunque il comando. Se così la sapienza garantisce la temperanza, questa a sua volta permette la sapienza. Ecco perché l’ascesa morale è intrecciata a quella conoscitiva. Ma, dato che l’ascesa conoscitiva interagisce con quella estetico-emotiva, l’ascesa morale va di pari passo anche con quella estetico-emotiva. In altre parole, più si conosce il Vero, più si ama il Bello, più si diventa virtuosi e ci si avvicina al Bene. E viceversa.

Quando un uomo riesce a sviluppare appieno la virtù, la sua anima si libera dalla “prigione” del corpo e risale al mondo delle Idee, dunque al Bene, cioè torna a vivere un’esistenza armonica e priva di dolore. Tuttavia, solo i filosofi possono farlo nel corso di una sola vita. La maggior parte degli uomini per riuscirci deve vivere più vite.
IL MITO DI ER E LA RESPONSABILITA’ INDIVIDUALE
Come ciò sia possibile, Platone lo spiega con il mito di Er, un guerriero che, durante una sorta di coma, ha visitato l’aldilà. Ripresa coscienza, Er racconta che dopo la morte, per un periodo di mille anni, le anime dei viziosi vengono punite fino all’espiazione delle loro colpe.
Al termine di tale periodo tutte le anime, in base a un ordine di successione casuale, devono scegliere una nuova vita, umana o animale, tra tutte quelle possibili rimaste disponibili. Non è detto che chi sceglie per primo sia più fortunato perché ha più probabilità di sbagliare, p.e. scegliendo la vita del tiranno che sembra la migliore ma in realtà è la peggiore.
In questo modo, Platone fonda il principio morale della responsabilità individuale. Secondo tale principio, ciò che siamo non dipende da forze esterne ma soprattutto da noi, dalle nostre libere e volontarie decisioni.
Una volta scelte le proprie nuove vite, tutte le anime bevono l’acqua del fiume Lete, che cancella la loro memoria. E poi rinascono in un nuovo corpo. Ogni anima si reincarna per 10 volte, e quindi ogni ciclo di reincarnazioni dura all’incirca 10.000 anni (questi numeri sono simbolici). Alla fine tutte le anime raggiungono la massima virtù, cioè la purificazione dal corpo, e tornano al mondo delle Idee, dove possono di nuovo godere del Bene. Ma poi di nuovo cadono, e il ciclo si ripete all’infinito.
